Like many great ideas, Volvo began in a café.

Two friends sat over lunch in Stockholm, Sweden, presumably sketching things out on napkins. Their names were Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, and they dreamed of creating a car company.

Larson was an engineer, who sketched up all the original designs for Volvo cars. He was the idea guy. Gabrielsson had the money. He was a sales specialist, and helped fund and promote their cars.

Their collective dream was not just to turn a profit. There was real need for a car like Volvo in Sweden. Imported cars were not rugged enough to handle the winters there. Even in their humble origins in 1927, the founders held human safety as their top priority.

They were quoted as saying, "Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain safety"

That principal holds true to this day. Come down to Smothers European and see how far our Volvo cars have come.
