Gone are the days of the five and six cylinders that have defined the Volvo brand for many years. The automaker is ramping up for an extensive overhaul, beginning with the introduction of an engine that has already been integrated into the upcoming lineup, starting with the 2015 Volvo S60, V60 and XC60 models.

The Volvo Drive-E powertrain includes an all-new four-cylinder setup that is powered by either gas or diesel. The phase out of the characteristic five-plus cylinders leaves a big void for Volvo fans, but the petite Drive-E is more than capable of filling it, both with performance specs and fuel economy numbers.

The Drive-E T5 and T6 options, including a diesel variant, are all turbocharged -- the T6 adding a supercharger for 302 horsepower.

Need to put the Drive-E in the context of the track to see how it really measures up? It's true -- bigger really isn't always better:
