Electric vehicles are poised to have a big impact on our future as their popularity rises, and technology evolves going forward. One thing everyone wants to see are EVs that can ride on for long distances with an energy source replenishing the batteries on the go. Volvo sees that happening on the road. Literally.
Well, to be more specific, the automaker thinks that energy source can come from within the road itself. On a quarter mile stretch of pavement near its Gothenburg, Sweden headquarters, Volvo has installed power lines in the surface of the road in order to test out the possibility of on-the-go charging for electric cars. The testing involves a truck that is able to evaluate how much current the supply inside the road, and trying to find ways to actively connect the both together, to allow for re-charging.
As you can tell, that's very early on in the process, but at Smothers European Volvo, we're hopeful they can get there.
It's not completely uncharted territory for Volvo, however. They've built city buses that are able to pick up short spurts of additional power at each station stop they make. The difference here is distance traveled, and how to make electric roads a long-term solution.
It's certainly an exciting prospect and if there are any new updates you can find them right here on our blog. In the meantime, you can visit us in our Santa Rosa, CA showroom during regular business hours. Our team can discuss all new Volvo models, answer questions, and arrange test drives.
