Each year, IIHS comes out with its annual Top Safety Pick ratings, and this time it's added a new wrinkle to the test that evaluates safety on all kinds of vehicles. That includes new Volvo models from Smothers European Volvo. And, as many of you might have already guessed, the automaker was healthily represented on the list.

Five Volvo vehicles were honored as an IIHS Top Safety Pick, with one standing out among an elite few in regards to that new wrinkle we mentioned. Top Safety Pick + is a new designation from IIHS. In order to achieve this status, vehicles must pass the standard moderate overlap test that has been in place, and the new small overlap test with a 'good' rating or higher on both.

So, which new Volvo vehicle earned the coveted rank? That would be the Volvo S60.

It's not much of surprise to us. As standards of safety change, Volvo has always led the charge. So, when vehicles are now asked to do more than ever to keep us protected behind the wheel, it says a lot about the S60 and its merits as a sedan.

Rounding out the Volvo contingent is the Volvo C30, S80, XC60, and XC90, giving the automaker a spot on every luxury category in the IIHS Top Safety Pick ratings.
