Volvo is getting really big in to architecture lately. Not the kind where you build skyscrapers, but rather on its vehicle platforms. We've written about Scalable Produce Architecture here on the Smothers European Volvo blog before, and today, we're talking about it again, this time on the new Volvo XC90.

The ever-popular utility vehicle will undergo a complete refresh when it arrives in late 2014. The new scalable design will allow for it to be molded in to many different kinds of trims, and create a more visually stunning look. About 90 percent of the vehicle will be new using high-strength aluminum on the front and sides to make the XC90 about 200-350 pounds lighter. Of course, it will still have the same performance you'd expect out of a new Volvo, despite the lighter frame, and that goes for performance too.

Over time, the automaker wants to replace V-6 and V-8 engines with powerful, but efficient four-cylinder options, using Volvo Engine Architecture. This, along with the kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS) used by Formula 1 racers, will help lower fuel consumption by 20 percent, while enhancing acceleration at the same time.

It is all very fascinating stuff, and something we're going to track on the blog, so be sure to follow us today. We also invite you to stop in to our showroom located at 2881 Corby Ave. in Santa Rosa, CA. At Smothers European Volvo, we are always happy to highlight new Volvo vehicles that grab your attention, answer any questions you might have, and set up test drives at your convenience.
